Follow me
I will make you fishers of men
allow the dead to bury their own dead
he must deny himself, and take up his cross
sell your possessions and give to the poor
If anyone serves Me, he must
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they
Christ Jesus gave this command to those in the Bible. Does He still command it today? Oh, why even bother with the question? Why not just enjoy the blessings, the comfort, the rewards of living as a Christian? What has my life to do with some man who lived two thousand years ago? His ways are past, and I am able, no required, to live in the grace His death provided.
What has that man to do with me? I live only in what He has done for me.
Jean Donavan – 1953-1980
Jean was from an affluent American family. El Salvador became her lay missions journey. She followed Jesus into a place others were forced to abandon. He earthly journey ended while driving in a van with three nuns. Ambushed by six men who raped and shot them. Men paid to destroy “subversives.” She speaks to us now.
It’s a terrible risk to follow even a Friend into the unknown. It is made worse by the fact that He so often seems to disappear or go ahead instead of staying close by.
The instructions He gives us should make it so much easier to continue on the journey: but what instructions?
· Don’t provide extra for yourself in case I let you down.
· Don’t worry what to say.
· I will be there when you need Me, even if it’s only at the last moment.[i]
Your name and the moments of your life
You, a follower of Jesus Christ. A person full of life, wonder, hopes, and dreams. A lover of God and all His creation. Stepped into eternity today next to the unseen Master as you….
In life and in death.
In success and in failure.
Seeing and blinded.
We come.
We follow.
