He's Got The Whole World
I remember setting in the church pew and singing with great
joy this spiritual. I don’t know if that South Dakota group had any musical
skills at playing a spiritual, but we had plenty of passion. To the group of
farmers, ranchers, military personal and the aging audience, knowing that God
had everything in control was exciting. Using the words that had encouraged
others who were imprisoned by life, we too were singing and looking for our deliverance.
Sadly, today, I find few people rejoicing in the providence
of God. It seems like mankind now thinks in more deistic terms. God started
this all off, but it is now up to us to work things out, to find peace on
earth, to solve global events. History is now in our hands. We are the ones who
will bring joy to the earth or be the cause of weeping in the streets.
Of the 316 million or so people living in the United States,
how many of them matter. Does every life matters? I believe they do. From the elderly
sitting in the nursing home to the unborn child, everyone matters. The life of
an unwed mother and the life of a carpenter laboring in rural areas matter. The
immigrant, going to a country, and coming from a country, matters. These are
all a part of the story we celebrate this time of year. This story of the birth
of Christ Jesus speaks to racism, immigration, quality of life, justice,
political control, crimes of the state, and most importantly, the rule of God.
He’s got the whole world in his hand. Amen? God is not just
the creator of the word but He is also Savior, Redeemer, Lord, Ruler and a
hundred other titles that reveal His ongoing activity in our lives. Do you
recall this passage in the Christmas story?
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.
Luk 2:1-5 NASB
World events that are driven by political powers do not
violate the working of God. Don’t let discouragement and despair set in. God
has told us in the story of this season that little people, unknown people,
matter. That “everyday men and women” are being used by God to fulfill His
kingdom and rule. Though it looks like so many things are being forced upon us,
though we are being driven to spend our time and treasures in ways we did not
choose, look up. He’s got the whole world in His hands.
So give this a try. Sing this song. I know it’s not “White
Christmas” or “Rudolf The Red Nose Reindeer” but give it a try and see if the
Lord will awaken your heart to rest today in His rule on the earth. Among the
reports of terror, economic collapse, shootings, injustice, poverty and missing
the last holiday sale, maybe you can find a security not of this world.
Although you are in this world you can find a peace that is beyond. He has the
whole world in His hand.
