Jesus and Baseball by Rodney A Drury

Jesus and Baseball

Great Stories about baseball collide with insights into the Kingdom of God

Here is how the chapter on Personal Responsibility starts.

Onto the field runs Ka-boom. That’s not his real name, but that title reveals the hope and potential that Ka-boom saw in himself as a seven year old ball player. Ka-boom wanted to be a great ball player and wanted others see him that way, too. He wanted to be a star. Ka-boom was also uncoordinated, overweight and lacking in hand-eye skills. I loved Ka-boom and to this day I still do. I run into Ka-boom now and then; a decade has passed since he was on my team, and he is a great young man, giving, kind, hardworking and still a little clumsy.

So who is to blame for this lack of ability? Ka-boom was not given the gifts from God that helped him fulfill his dreams about baseball. He worked hard in practice. His efforts included pushing through the discouragement that came when he failed because of his limited ability.  I know we often tell people that you can do whatever you set your mind on, but that just isn’t always true.

Some of the chapter titles can be seen below. You can preview them all  here or on Amazon. These stories and the life lessons they contain are great for connecting the world of sports and Jesus. Children and adults alike will enjoy the illustrations of 6-8 year old kids learning to play baseball and how their lessons matter in church life. Men's groups and youth groups can focus on God while using baseball as an enjoyable on ramp or common ground.
